1. Everything is in the foundation. In Northeastern Ohio, a thirty-nine inch depth is recommended for decks. It
is imperative that you build your deck on solid footing.
2. Deck beams need to be sized correctly for bearing the required load. Use span charts for deck
construction or contact a design professional.
3. Be sure that the joists are properly sized for the span. Deck builders have charts for this as well.
4. We cannot stress enough the importance of flashing on the ledger board in all deck building/construction.
This should be done by a professional.
5. Be sure to note the kind of decking you will be using because this will determine the joint spacing on your
deck.

Installing joist hangers on your deck against the ledger board is also highly recommended.
7. There are a lot of decking options. Be sure to know how the recommended way to fasten them is and
follow those instructions. Failure to do so could void warranty on decking.
8. Check for joist plane prior to installing the decking to eliminate the wavy effect.
9. Attach the rail posts with bolts or structural screws not nails. This will prevent future wobbling when
someone leans on your deck railing.
10. If you choose to go with wood railings, hand select the lumber at your supplier, as this will be the most
visible part of the deck.
11. If some manufactured railing is the choice for your deck rail be sure to follow their installation directions.
12. Always consult a structural engineer before any deck building yourself.
13. Northeast Ohio requires deck building permits. Contact the building department for a deck permit.
